Nihar Kaviratne serves as Independent, Non-executive director in GlaxoSmithKline Pharmaceuticals Limited.
Mr. Kaviratne's career with the Unilever Group spanned 40 years during which he held various senior level management positions in sales, marketing, brand and strategic planning and development, and as Chairman/CEO across Asia, Europe and Latin America. He retired from Unilever in 2005.
Nihal is an Independent, Non-Executive Director of several Temasek-linked companies including StarHub Limited where he is Lead Independent Director and Olam International Limited. He is a Member of the Private Sector Portfolio Advisory Committee in India for the UK Government's Department for International Development (DFID). He was appointed a member of the Global Corporate Resilience Advisory Council of McKinsey effective January 2018 and also appointed as Senior Advisor of Bain & Company for SEA from January 2021. He is also the Chairman of Caraway Pte Ltd, Singapore. He was appointed to Chair the SATS Advisory Panel for Indonesia, effective January 2021. His past Chairman/Director roles include DBS Bank, Agro Tech Foods Limited (affiliate of ConAgra Foods, USA), Titan Industries, Fullerton India Credit Company Ltd., Wildlife Reserves Singapore, TVS Motor Company Indonesia, SATS Ltd, Akzo Nobel India Ltd (formerly ICI).
He was chosen by Business Week in 2002 for the Stars of Asia Award as one of the '25 leaders at the forefront of change'. Cited in the Queen's 2004 New Year Honours List in the UK, Mr Kaviratne has been awarded Commander of the British Empire (CBE) for services to UK business interests and sustainable development in Indonesia. He was awarded for driving 'Business Excellence' at the World Business Conclave 2016 in Hong Kong.
He has a keen interest in programmes for community development, health and education. He is a Governing Board Member of the non-profit organization The Bombay Mothers and Children Welfare Society, and the Founder of St. Jude India Childcare Centres. He is the Founder and President Emeritus of the International Wine & Food Society, Bombay Branch, and is a Chevalier du Tastevin.
Mr. Kaviratne holds a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) with a major in Economics from Bombay University, and attended the Advanced Management Programme at Harvard Business School and the Advanced Executive Programme at the Kellogg School of Management, North Western University, U.S.A.
